We were all feel\u00ading seedy<\/span>, and we were get\u00adting quite ner\u00advous about it. Har\u00adris said he felt such extra\u00ador\u00addi\u00adnary fits<\/span> of gid\u00addi\u00adness<\/span> come over<\/span> him at times<\/span>, that he hard\u00adly knew what he was doing; and then George said that he had fits<\/span> of gid\u00addi\u00adness<\/span> too, and hard\u00adly knew what he was doing. With me<\/span>, it was my liv\u00ader<\/span> that was out of order<\/span>. I knew it was my liv\u00ader<\/span> that was out of order<\/span>, because I had just been read\u00ading a patent<\/span> liv\u00ader-pill<\/span> cir\u00adcu\u00adlar<\/span>, in which were detailed the var\u00adi\u00adous symp\u00adtoms by which a man could tell when his liv\u00ader<\/span> was out of order<\/span>. I had them all.<\/p>\n

It is a most extra\u00ador\u00addi\u00adnary thing, but I nev\u00ader read a patent med\u00adi\u00adcine<\/span> adver\u00adtise\u00adment<\/span> with\u00adout being impelled<\/span> to the con\u00adclu\u00adsion<\/span> that I am suf\u00adfer\u00ading<\/span> from the par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar<\/span> dis\u00adease<\/span> there\u00adin<\/span> dealt with<\/span> in its most vir\u00adu\u00adlent<\/span> form. The diag\u00adno\u00adsis seems in every case to cor\u00adre\u00adspond exact\u00adly with all the sen\u00adsa\u00adtions<\/span> that I have ever felt.<\/p>\n

I remem\u00adber going to the British Muse\u00adum one day to read up the treat\u00adment<\/span> for some slight<\/span> ail\u00adment<\/span> of which I had a touch<\/span> \u2013 hay fever<\/span>, I fan\u00adcy<\/span> it was. I got down<\/span> the book, and read all I came to<\/span> read; and then, in an unthink\u00ading moment<\/span>, I idly<\/span> turned the leaves, and began to indo\u00adlent\u00adly<\/span> study dis\u00adeases<\/span>, gen\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly. I for\u00adget which was the first dis\u00adtem\u00adper<\/span> I plunged<\/span> into \u2013 some fear\u00adful, dev\u00adas\u00adtat\u00ading<\/span> scourge<\/span>, I know \u2013 and, before I had glanced half<\/span> down the list of \u201cpre\u00admon\u00adi\u00adto\u00adry symp\u00adtoms<\/span>,\u201d it was borne in upon me<\/span> that I had fair\u00adly got it<\/span>.<\/p>\n

I sat for awhile<\/span>, frozen with hor\u00adror; and then, in the list\u00adless\u00adness<\/span> of despair<\/span>, I again turned over the pages<\/span>. I came to<\/span> typhoid fever<\/span>\u2013 read the symp\u00adtoms \u2013 dis\u00adcov\u00adered that I had typhoid fever<\/span>, must have had it for months with\u00adout know\u00ading it \u2013 won\u00addered what else I had got; turned up St. Vitus\u2019s Dance<\/span> \u2013 found, as I expect\u00aded, that I had that too, \u2013 began to get inter\u00adest\u00aded in my case<\/span>, and deter\u00admined to sift it to the bot\u00adtom<\/span>, and so start\u00aded alpha\u00adbet\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly \u2013 read up ague<\/span>, and learnt that I was sick\u00aden\u00ading for it<\/span>, and that the acute<\/span> stage would com\u00admence<\/span> in about anoth\u00ader fort\u00adnight<\/span>. Bright\u2019s dis\u00adease<\/span>, I was relieved to find, I had only in a mod\u00adi\u00adfied form, and, so far as that was con\u00adcerned, I might live for years. Cholera<\/span> I had, with severe com\u00adpli\u00adca\u00adtions<\/span>; and diph\u00adthe\u00adria<\/span> I seemed to have been born with. I plod\u00added<\/span> con\u00adsci\u00aden\u00adtious\u00adly<\/span> through the twen\u00adty-six let\u00adters, and the only mal\u00ada\u00addy<\/span> I could con\u00adclude<\/span> I had not got was housemaid\u2019s knee<\/span>.<\/p>\n

I felt rather hurt about<\/span> this at first; it seemed some\u00adhow to be a sort of slight<\/span>. Why hadn\u2019t I got housemaid\u2019s knee<\/span>? Why this invid\u00adi\u00adous<\/span> reser\u00adva\u00adtion<\/span>? After a while, how\u00adev\u00ader, less grasp\u00ading<\/span> feel\u00adings pre\u00advailed<\/span>. I reflect\u00aded<\/span> that I had every oth\u00ader known mal\u00ada\u00addy<\/span> in the phar\u00adma\u00adcol\u00ado\u00adgy, and I grew<\/span> less self\u00adish<\/span>, and deter\u00admined to do<\/span> with\u00adout housemaid\u2019s knee<\/span>. Gout<\/span>, in its most malig\u00adnant<\/span> stage, it would appear, had seized me with\u00adout my being aware of<\/span> it; and zymo\u00adsis<\/span> I had evi\u00addent\u00adly been suf\u00adfer\u00ading<\/span> with from boy\u00adhood<\/span>. There were no more dis\u00adeases<\/span> after zymo\u00adsis<\/span>, so I con\u00adclud\u00aded<\/span> there was noth\u00ading else the mat\u00adter with me<\/span>.<\/p>\n

I sat and pon\u00addered<\/span>. I thought what an inter\u00adest\u00ading case I must be from a med\u00adical point of view<\/span>, what an acqui\u00adsi\u00adtion<\/span> I should be to a class! Stu\u00addents would have no need to \u201cwalk the hos\u00adpi\u00adtals<\/span>,\u201d if they had me. I was a hos\u00adpi\u00adtal in myself. All they need do would be to walk round me, and, after that, take their diploma.<\/p>\n

Then I won\u00addered how long I had to live. I tried to exam\u00adine<\/span> myself. I felt my pulse. I could not at first feel any pulse at all. Then, all of a sud\u00adden<\/span>, it seemed to start off<\/span>. I pulled out<\/span> my watch and timed<\/span> it. I made<\/span> it a hun\u00addred and forty-sev\u00aden to the minute<\/span>. I tried to feel my heart. I could not feel my heart. It had stopped beat\u00ading. I have since been induced<\/span> to come to the opin\u00adion<\/span> that it must have been there all the time, and must have been beat\u00ading, but I can\u00adnot account for<\/span> it. I pat\u00adted<\/span> myself all over my front, from what I call<\/span> my waist<\/span> up to my head, and I went a bit round each side<\/span>, and a lit\u00adtle way up the back<\/span>. But I could not feel or hear any\u00adthing. I tried to look at my tongue<\/span>. I stuck it out<\/span> as far as ever it would go, and I shut one eye, and tried to exam\u00adine<\/span> it with the oth\u00ader. I could only see the tip<\/span>, and the only thing that I could gain<\/span> from that was to feel more cer\u00adtain than before that I had scar\u00adlet fever<\/span>.<\/p>\n

I had walked into that read\u00ading-room a hap\u00adpy, healthy man. I crawled out<\/span> a decrepit<\/span> wreck<\/span>.<\/p>\n

I went to my med\u00adical man<\/span>. He is an old chum<\/span> of mine, and feels my pulse, and looks at my tongue<\/span>, and talks about the weath\u00ader, all for noth\u00ading<\/span>, when I fan\u00adcy<\/span> I\u2019m ill; so I thought I would do him a good turn<\/span> by going to him now. \u201cWhat a doc\u00adtor wants,\u201d I said, \u201cis prac\u00adtice. He shall have me. He will get more prac\u00adtice out of me than out of sev\u00aden\u00adteen hun\u00addred of your ordi\u00adnary, com\u00admon\u00adplace<\/span> patients, with only one or two dis\u00adeases<\/span> each.\u201d So I went straight<\/span> up and saw him, and he said:<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, what\u2019s the mat\u00adter with you?<\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n

I said:<\/p>\n

\u201cI will not take up your time<\/span>, dear boy, with telling you what is the mat\u00adter with me<\/span>. Life is brief, and you might pass away<\/span> before I had fin\u00adished. But I will tell you what is not<\/span> the mat\u00adter with me<\/span>. I have not got housemaid\u2019s knee<\/span>. Why I have not got housemaid\u2019s knee<\/span>, I can\u00adnot tell you; but the fact remains that I have not got it. Every\u00adthing else, how\u00adev\u00ader, I have got.\u201d<\/p>\n

And I told him how I came to<\/span> dis\u00adcov\u00ader it all.<\/p>\n

Then he opened me and looked down me, and clutched hold of<\/span> my wrist<\/span>, and then he hit me over the chest<\/span> when I wasn\u2019t expect\u00ading it \u2013 a cow\u00adard\u00adly<\/span> thing to do, I call<\/span> it \u2013 and imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly after\u00adwards butted<\/span> me with the side of his head. After that, he sat down and wrote out<\/span> a pre\u00adscrip\u00adtion<\/span>, and fold\u00aded it up<\/span> and gave it me, and I put it in my pock\u00adet and went out<\/span>.<\/p>\n

I did not open it. I took<\/span> it to the near\u00adest chemist\u2019s<\/span>, and hand\u00aded it in<\/span>. The man read it, and then hand\u00aded it back<\/span>.<\/p>\n

He said he didn\u2019t keep<\/span> it.<\/p>\n

I said:<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are a chemist<\/span>?\u201d<\/p>\n

He said:<\/p>\n

\u201cI am a chemist<\/span>. If I was a co-oper\u00ada\u00adtive<\/span> stores and fam\u00adi\u00adly hotel com\u00adbined, I might be able to oblige<\/span> you. Being only a chemist<\/span> ham\u00adpers<\/span> me.\u201d<\/p>\n

I read the pre\u00adscrip\u00adtion<\/span>. It ran<\/span>:<\/p>\n

I fol\u00adlowed the direc\u00adtions<\/span>, with the hap\u00adpy result \u2013 speak\u00ading for myself \u2013 that my life was pre\u00adserved<\/span>, and is still going on<\/span>.<\/p>\n

In the present instance<\/span>, going back<\/span> to the liv\u00ader-pill<\/span> cir\u00adcu\u00adlar<\/span>, I had the symp\u00adtoms, beyond all mis\u00adtake<\/span>, the chief<\/span> among them being \u201ca gen\u00ader\u00adal dis\u00adin\u00adcli\u00adna\u00adtion<\/span> to work of any kind.\u201d<\/p>\n

What I suf\u00adfer<\/span> in that way<\/span> no tongue can tell<\/span>. From my ear\u00adli\u00adest infan\u00adcy<\/span> I have been a mar\u00adtyr<\/span> to it. As a boy, the dis\u00adease<\/span> hard\u00adly ever left me for a day. They did not know, then<\/span>, that it was my liv\u00ader<\/span>. Med\u00adical sci\u00adence was in a far less advanced state than now, and they used to put it down to<\/span> lazi\u00adness<\/span>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy, you skulk\u00ading<\/span> lit\u00adtle dev\u00adil<\/span>, you,\u201d they would say, \u201cget up<\/span> and do some\u00adthing for your liv\u00ading<\/span>, can\u2019t you?\u201d \u2013 not know\u00ading, of course, that I was ill.<\/p>\n

And they didn\u2019t give me pills; they gave me clumps<\/span> on the side of the head. And, strange as it may appear<\/span>, those clumps<\/span> on the head often cured<\/span> me \u2013 for the time being<\/span>. I have known one clump<\/span> on the head have more effect upon my liv\u00ader<\/span>, and make me feel more anx\u00adious<\/span> to go straight away<\/span> then and there<\/span>, and do what was want\u00aded to be done, with\u00adout fur\u00adther loss of time, than a whole box of pills does now.<\/p>\n

You know, it often is so<\/span> \u2013 those sim\u00adple, old-fash\u00adioned reme\u00addies<\/span> are some\u00adtimes more effi\u00adca\u00adcious<\/span> than all the dis\u00adpen\u00adsary<\/span> stuff.<\/p>\n

We sat there for half-an-hour, describ\u00ading to each oth\u00ader our mal\u00adadies<\/span>. I explained to George and William Har\u00adris how I felt when I got up<\/span> in the morn\u00ading, and William Har\u00adris told us how he felt when he went to bed; and George stood on the hearth-rug<\/span>, and gave us a clever and pow\u00ader\u00adful piece of act\u00ading<\/span>, illus\u00adtra\u00adtive of<\/span> how he felt in the night.<\/p>\n

George fan\u00adcies<\/span> he is ill; but there\u2019s nev\u00ader any\u00adthing real\u00adly the mat\u00adter with him<\/span>, you know.<\/p>\n

At this point<\/span>, Mrs. Pop\u00adpets knocked at the door to know if we were ready for sup\u00adper<\/span>. We smiled sad\u00adly at one anoth\u00ader, and said we sup\u00adposed we had bet\u00adter try to swal\u00adlow<\/span> a bit. Har\u00adris said a lit\u00adtle some\u00adthing in one\u2019s stom\u00adach often kept the dis\u00adease in check<\/span>; and Mrs. Pop\u00adpets brought the tray in, and we drew up to the table<\/span>, and toyed<\/span> with a lit\u00adtle steak and onions, and some rhubarb<\/span> tart<\/span>.<\/p>\n

I must have been very weak at the time<\/span>; because I know, after the first half-hour or so, I seemed to take no inter\u00adest<\/span> what\u00adev\u00ader in my food \u2013 an unusu\u00adal thing for me \u2013 and I didn\u2019t want any cheese.<\/p>\n

This duty done<\/span>, we refilled our glass\u00ades, lit our pipes<\/span>, and resumed<\/span> the dis\u00adcus\u00adsion upon our state of health. What it was that was actu\u00adal\u00adly the mat\u00adter with us<\/span>, we none of us could be sure of; but the unan\u00adi\u00admous<\/span> opin\u00adion was that it \u2013 what\u00adev\u00ader it was \u2013 had been brought on by over\u00adwork<\/span>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we want is rest,\u201d said Harris.<\/p>\n

\u201cRest and a com\u00adplete change,\u201d said George. \u201cThe over\u00adstrain<\/span> upon our brains has pro\u00adduced a gen\u00ader\u00adal depres\u00adsion through\u00adout the sys\u00adtem. Change of scene, and absence of the neces\u00adsi\u00adty for thought, will restore the men\u00adtal equi\u00adlib\u00adri\u00adum<\/span>.\u201d<\/p>\n

George has a cousin<\/span>, who is usu\u00adal\u00adly described in the charge-sheet<\/span> as a med\u00adical stu\u00addent, so that he nat\u00adu\u00adral\u00adly has a some\u00adwhat fam\u00adi\u00adly-physi\u00adcia\u00adnary<\/span> way of putting things<\/span>.<\/p>\n

At sea, you come across<\/span> plen\u00adty of peo\u00adple very bad indeed, whole boat-loads of<\/span> them; but I nev\u00ader met a man yet, on land, who had ever known at all what it was to be sea-sick<\/span>. Where the thou\u00adsands upon thou\u00adsands<\/span> of bad sailors that swarm<\/span> in every ship hide them\u00adselves when they are on land is a mystery.<\/p>\n
